In 2016, I embarked on an unforgettable expedition to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, a challenging yet rewarding 37-mile trail to a summit at 19,341 ft elevation.
With a gain of 16,000-17,000 feet elevation, the "Whiskey Route" is known for steep climbs like the Barranco Wall at 843 ft. as well as tented overnights.
It offers stunning views and diverse habitats, making it the most popular choice for climbers.
Despite its reputation, the trail is accessible to first-time backpackers with proper training and provides an excellent acclimatization profile.
Located within Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the route highlights the mountain's natural beauty and ecological significance.
